l. NY Times reports this afternoon that Dr. Salia has passed away at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He was admitted in severe respiratory distress and renal failure on Saturday (Day #5 of his course). Despite heroic measures and ZMapp and convalescent serum transfusion, he did not survive. I thank Secretary Burwell and Chancellor Gold at the University for bringing this brave and faithful physician to the University for the most advanced care known.
2. 1 November New Scientist (delivered today) gives details on the Wyss Institute at Harvard’s new ‘bio-filter paper’ to detect EBOV by a color change produced when a particular viral RNA ‘activates’ a synthetic matching DNA segment. See the entire report and the citations in Cell at: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn26451-biological-litmus-paper-detects-ebola-strains.html#.VGp_MnLu2cy
Many EBOV websites worldwide are quiet today, perhaps in mourning for Dr. Salia.
