Dear Colleagues: Today is Sunday in the U.S; Sunday is the second day of rest in our Saturday/Sunday weekend. EBOV reports from the news media and Web are decreased on the weekends. But there is some news to report:
l. Al Jazeera reports that a 10th physician in Sierra Leone has died of EBOV. Only 1 Sierra Leone physician with EBOV has survived his disease.
2. Journal of Virology 3 December has an article by Lauck, et. al. from Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison reporting that 13 of 49 patients with EBOV in Sierra Leone also had the pegivirus GBV-C. These patients with GBV-C had a 50+% survival rate, while patients without GBV-C had a 20+% survival rate. Patients between the ages of 21-45 years had the highest rate of GBV-C. In HIV disease GBV-C decreases the pathogenicity of HIV by decreasing the immune response. Perhaps GBV-C has the same action in EBOV. Alternatively, the improved survival rate of EBOV patients with GBV-C may be due to their intermediate age (21-45 years).
